AUCKLAND BY-ELECTION.
SPLIT IN LABOR RANKS.

A split in the Labor ranks in regard to the choice of a candidate for Auckland East election has resulted in the central committee transferring its support from Mr. Knight, who was chosen at a mass meeting of unionists, to Mr. George 'Davis. DATE OF THE POLLING.
Auckland, Las': Night.
The election of a member of the House of Representatives, as representative of Auckland East, vice the late Mr. V. E. Baume, K.C., 8.A., LL.B., will be held on Thursday, the Kith inst. Nominations will be received up to Wednesday, the Bth inst.
CANDIDATES OPEN FIRE,
Auckland, Last Night
Mr. Arthur M, Myers, who is a candidate for the Auckland East seat as an Independent Liberal, opened his campaign this evening, when he addressed a largely attended meeting of electors. He commended the legislation passen L>y the Liberal Party since it came into power, and stated that these measures, especially those from 1894 onwards, had done a great deal to promote the prosperity of the country. Mr. Myers received a vote of thanks and confidence. Mr. W. Richardson; another of the candidates, said he was « Prohibitionist and a Protectionist. He was opposed to the Ward administration because he considered it was working hand in glove with the Liquor Party, and did not strive for the welfare of the masses.
