Among the passengers for Auckland, per s.s. Rarawa, last night were Mr. C 0. Hawke and Mrs. William Bayly. Madame Carreno, the distinguished pianist, commences her Dunedin season on June 15. Mr. A. Weller, in cltarge of the Taihaipe Post, who has been spending a few days in Xew Plymouth, left by this morning's mail train. A Palmerston Press message states that a largely attended meeting of St. Andrew's Church last night gave a unanimous call to the Rev. E. Doull, of Otahuhu, Auckland. The death is reported of Mr. Brunker, a Legislative Councillor who was for years in the Xew South Wales Parliament. He was a former Minister of Lands, and was Chief Secretary in the Pa rke-s-Rcid Administration.

Mr. John Stenhouse, ex-rector, is to have his forty-five years' teaching career recognised by*the residents of Lawrence by a presentation on the 22nd inst. His term as a teacher is probably a record' for the Dominion.

Captain (5. W. Bignell, who has been harbormaster at Hokitika since 1886, died on Sunday night after a protracted illness. He was also secretary of the Hokitika Harbor Board, and was widely •known, having been a colonist for over liftv years. At one time he was captain of the tuir Titau and afterwards of the steamer Wnipara. The Hon. Tlios. MncKenzie, Minister of Agriculture, telegraphed to the Hon. Mr. H. Okey, M.P., as follows:-"Un-less prevented upon my arrival in Wellington, by something unforeseen, it is my intention to be at the show on Wednesday. I will be liappy to meet farmers re noxious weeds, but cannot say if it will be possible for ine to go to the oil works."

Detective Livingstone, who is now stationed in Christchuroh, will retire at the end of this month, after having beei in the police fore* for thirty-five years. Mr. Francis Kilfoyle, who was for thirty yeats in the service of the Land* and Sruvey Department, died at Parnell last week, aged seventv-seven veara. He arrived m the Dominion in 1847. Mr. Kilfoyle retired on superannuation tw» years ago.
