This afternoon Powelka pleaded guilty to breaking and entering Perry's store, Longburn, on March 27. The Crown has withdrawn the cha.ge of arson in connection with the fire at Millar and Giorgi's 'premises, also the charge of theft at Slatterv's promises. When the jury have given their decision in the Kendall sticking-up ens.? all the charges against Powelka v ill have been disposed of. JURY DISAGREE. Palmerston North, Last Night. The case of alleged robbery under arms against Powelka was heard to-day. Evidence was given by Mr. and Mrs. Kendall, who recognised Powelka as their assailant. Accused was the only witness for the defence, and confined himself to saying ha was not there and 'knew nothing of the occurrence. The defence sought to cast doubt oil the truth of th'e Kendalls' story. The jury, after five hours' retirement, disagreed, and a new trial is called for Monday.
