ILLEGAL BETTING. By Telegraph —Press Association. Dannevirke. Yesterday. A man named Charles Baker was fined £lO and £5 costs at the Magistrate's Court this morning for betting on the sports ground at Wallingford in February last. A DISHONEST BOOKKEEPER. Auckland.. Yesterday. At the Police Court Sidney Saunders was charp-od with steaJing from his employers, Messrs'. Tonson, Garliok r.nd Co., sums of money totalling £IOO6. Saunders had been' in the employ of the company for eleven years, the last eight as head book-keeper and assistant cashier. His salary for some time had been £234 per annum. An examination of his books' traced fifty irregularities. The accused, when arrested, gave the detectives a written confession, admitting that he frequently stole money belonging to the firm. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence.
