WHANGAMOMONA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the above Council took place at Whanganiomona ou Wednesday, 25th ult. Present: Crs. W.. A. MoOutchan chairman), J. W. Jones, E. B. Robertson, J. Anderson, R. McCluggage, T. Mcllroy and A. Meredith. Immediately after the minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, Cr. McOutchan moved and Cr. Mcllroy seconded, "That tliis Council desires vo place on record the widespread grief prevailing throughout the district on account of the death of King Edward VII.. The Council sympathises with the Queen Mother in her affliction, and hopes that the reign of her son, King George V., may (be long and .peaceful, and character - I ised by the ever-widening enlightenment | and well-being of .ill parts of the great Empire over which he rules." | The resolution was carried with the usual marks of respect, and the Council proceeded to ordinary business. On the motion of Cr. Anderson, seconded by Cr. Meredith it was resolvea that the letter, as drafted bv the chairman, be forwarded to the Eltham County 'Council in reply to their circular in re the question of administration expenses in connection with the expenditure of Government grants for road works. The engineer's report was read and adopted, and the following resolutions in connection therewith passed: That the engineer be instructed to 'have the work recommended in his report on the Ta-puni road put in hand; that the engineer's recommendation re the disposal of surplus burnt papa on the Mangaowhata road be given effect to; that the engineer's recommendation that the permanent employees be instructed to see that the Council's by-laws are observed be adopted; that the burnt papa in the; Prospect road kiln be used for main-' tenance on the Ohura road from the Mangare road to the Kohuratahi road; that the engineer interview the Resident Road Engineer and endeavor to arrange for the Public Works Department to undertake the maintenance of the Ohura road from the beginning of the metal on the Whangamomona Saddle to the Mangare road. The Council went into committee to deal with tenders for contract No. 21, cleaning and felling bush on portion of the Maiigaehu road. On resuming, the Council adopted the committee's report recommending that Messrs Houlihan and Henne'boy's tender be accepted. It was decided that the clerk, Mr. A. Coleman, should represent the Council at the conference to be held at Wellington between the clerks of the various counties and the heads of the Audit ana Treasury Departments. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follow®: — From Mr. J. B. Hine. M.P., re matters which the 'Council might wish to be brought before the House. From the Public Works Department, advising that Mr. Short be appointed! a commissioner to hear the dispute between the Stratford and Whangamomona County Councils re the maintenance 'of the Ohura, road between Strathmore and Douglas.—The Council went into committee to consider the matter, and on resuming the cleric was instructed to acknowledge receipt of the letter and leather the necessary information as to the procedure to be followed in the matter. \ . , A deputation of residents of the township waited on the Council asking for permission* to use the Council Chamber; as accommodation for a library about to be established in Wteungamomona.—The Council regretted that it could not see its wav clear to accede to the request, I Hit decided to grant the sum of £7 10s in aid of the funds of the library. With reference to the motion, not.-ce of which {had been given by Cr. Meredith, re the striking of a bridge rate over the Strathmore riding, it was decided toat Cr. Meredith be granted further leave to defer the matter until next meeting of the Council.—Cr. Meredith was authorised to consult the county solicitors re the procedure necessary to be observed in striking a bridge rate and raising a bridge loam. It was resolved that further application be made to the Government for a subsidy on the £ISOO loan on the Upper Manigiaehu road. The sum of £5 was authorised to be expended in repairing the track on the Upiper Mangaehu road. The engineer was instructed to have the Prospect road repaired with burnt papa from the kiln thereon. It was resolved that the ranger lie atfked to explain why he has not taken un the duties of to office, and to advise ".••Tether he has any intention of undertp:lcin<r them forthwith. Tt 'vis resolved that the engineer prenare an estimate of the expenditure wr the ensuing year, so that the amount of general rate necessary to Ibe levied •may ibe ascertained. It was decided that all outstanding rates be put in the solicitors' hands for immediate collection, as the amount of subs ids' received from the Government depends upon the amount of rates collected by the Council before the 30th j I June. Cr. Jones gave notice to move that the allocation from the Brewer road general rates to the Ohura road be on a lower'proportion- than that from other by-roads. Accounts amounting to £738 12s lOd were passed for payment and the Council adjourned.—Post.
