(From Our Own Correspondent). TARIKI. The Tariki Horticultural Society are, much indebted to ilr. G. V. Tate for the trouble and time lie has devote<T to judging the root crops, and for the instructive and detailed report he has forwarded to the secretary . There vviV seven entries for the turnip crop, and, 1 although the blight had affected most of them, the judge was pleased with die evident pains that had been taken in the cultivation of the ground, where he noticed a great improvement on last year. Mr. D. Jakes was awarded first prize, Mr. J .Knowles second, and Mr. A. Cowly ( third. In carrots, Mr. Trewin was placed first, the judge remarking: "This was' a ■nice crop for quality; ground well work-! Ed and dean. The crop would have 'benefited with more thinning out and! drilled a little, wider apart." Mr. A. 1 Long was placed second arid Mr. Cowlyj third. General remarks: "The land] should have been deeply cultivated, drilled 18 to 20 inches apart, and carrots' well thinned out, and great care should | be made in selecting good seed, other-! wise good crops were spoiled by the number of carrots run to seed and being fangy." Mr. A. Long was first for the mangold crop, the judge remarking that s'ome of the yellow globe were nicely shaped and fit for show. Mr. Tate, in a letter to the secretary, remarked: "All' crops judged show more care and culti- 1 vation and tillage and a great improvement on last year's, notwithstanding the blight." He also expressed his appreciation of the services of Mr. C. J. Young,' who acted as steward. EGMOXT VILLAGE. The Cribbage Club played a social match 011 Wednesday evening last, A. v. li. The B. team were four players snort, so two of the A. team played for the B's. The match resulted in the B.'s gaining a victory by the narrow margin of five games. Supper was provided and an enjoyable evening was spent. Messrs G. Barker and G. Brett with eleven games out of 15 were the highest sjcoiwrs for the winners. A dance, under the auspices of the Hall Improvement ■Committee, was held in the hall on Thursday evening. The attendance was small owing to rough weather. Mr. Geo. Marsh, assisted by Messrs B. G. and G. Marsh and F. Dewhirst, supplied good music. Supper was dispensed at II p.m. and was much enjoyed. Dancing continued till early morning. Halley's comet has been visible every night this week. Mr. and (Mrs. Geo. Marsh celebrate their silver wedding on Friday next. It is understood that Mr. Arrowsmithj lias disposed of his Kent road farm to Mr. Xorman Rundle. KAIMIRO. Miss Elsie Gibson, assistant at Kaimiro school, received a present from the scholars and parents on the occasion of her marriage. The gift was a silver teapot. Ivaimiro people are sorry the popular teacher is leaving. A fancy dress, ball was held in the Kaimiro Hall on Friday evening last.l An excellent supper wis provided, l'lie' ladies' committee are to be congratulated on the success of the function. I The Kaimiro nigger minstrel troupe propose paying a visit to our neighbors at Fgmont Village shortly to perform in aid of the Rifle Club.
