HORSE-STEALER SENTENCED. By Telegraph —Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. At the Supreme Court' this afternoon John Trembath, of Ashburton, was charged with horse-stealing in January, 190!). He was found guilty and sentenced to two years' imprisonment. Prisoner is serving a sentence of eighteen months for forgery. PALMERSTON NORTH SESSIONS. Palmerston North. Last Night. At the Supreme Court yesterday, before Mr, Justice Cooper. George Murray, a railway porter at Ivarioi, a small station four miles from Oha'kune, was charged "with the theft of five £1 postal notes, the property of R. P. Bailey, of Wellington. The notes were posted in a letter by Mrs. Bowl, Oha'kune, and delivered to another, R. Bailey, a rail-1 way ganger at Karioi. The latter gave! the notes to accused to return to the' Post Office. A Maori stated that ac-l cused had given him four notes for! ch-amr" for a five pound note, and addedl a sovereign some days later. The de-j fence denied having any transaction with' this Maori. Accused stated that he had| put tilie letter on the railway counter, and never saw it again. The jury found a verdict of not guilty on the ground of insufficient evidence ag to who took the notes. Albert George Steward, a tailor, of Feil'dina, bankrupt, was acquitted on a eharee of incurring debts without reasonable expectation of paying the same.
