STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Resident Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. I have been shown the model of a newinvention in dredges which the inventor, Mr. F. Whiley, of this town, claims will revolutionise the method of extracting the golden metal from its resting place. Sfome idea of the value of the invention may Ibe gathered from the fact that a plant costing £.1500 will put through the same amount of material as a dredge which, worked on the present principles in vogue, would involve an expenditure of £14,000. Apart from the initial expense it is claimed for the new dredge that there would lie a saving in the running of thirty shillings per eight-hour shift. Mr. Whiley recently spent three years in Westland studying the methods of gold saving and treatment and was astounded thnt no effort was being made to work some 200 miles of coast line containing gold in varying payable quantities. He is confident his invention win enable this vast expanse of auriferous ground to be worked at a handsome profit. It may be mentioned that Mr. Whilev and his' brother are the patentees of the destination indicator now in use on the principal railways of America .and England. A company with a capital of £3OOO, in which many People familiar with mining fere taking shares, is being floated with the object of placing the invention on the market. The "sneak thief" has been on ihe warpath of late, and there are many who complain of his "surprise" visits. On Saturday night and Sunday morning early lie wns busy taking toll ot various "safes for a Sunday dinner. At one house he mi=sed the safe, apparently because it was further away from the house than usual. The owner, on looking out to ascertain if anything was the matter, saw a man and woman vanishing. Whether they are the culprits has to be solved. • At the Court to-day a charge against A. Wood, of Tututavva, and S. Appleby, of having stolen thirty sheep, the property of F. Bayly, of Tututawa, is being heard. The case is' not yet concluded. Mrs. Tlios. Kingston died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Sawle, on Saturday. Deceased was seventy-eight years of age. Judgment has been reserved in the case in, which F. E. Taylor is suing W. Iv. Kneebone fcr damages Sustained through alleged negligent driving. On Saturday the Stratford School footbajl team defeated Waitara 'by 11 points to nil.
The general opinion is tint', the team selected to represent Tara'iald against j Wanganui will give a good account of, itself. The forwards eve ■.'. heavy divis-j ion, but it is considered they are a trifle I on the slow side. To any ardent horticulturist unfortunate enough to forget at night to properly close the gate giving access to the road, there comes' in the morning quick repentance for his fbrgetfillness and a, longing to "say things." Tie will ■rind that a number of horses and probably a cow or two have invaded the precincts and paid particular attention to shrubs or vegetables. Should he possess « lawn in which he takes a pride, the sight of numerous' hoof marks is a justifiable cause for wrath. The ''long paddock" is in great demand, anil where all the ani-| mals which are to be seen grazing on the roads come from or how their owners find them in the early hours of the morning, is one of those mysteries that puzzle the average resident. Apart from damage to gardens, one wonders how grounds would fare if the American custom of abolition of fences was in vogue —and to footpaths there is another danger through which a resident passed the other evening. Approaching his house he saw a draught horse on the footpath. As to avoid the obstacle meant going on to the road, he essayed, with sundry sounds, customary in such a case, to induce the animal to wend its way to '"pastures new." But the I horse, acting up to the policy of possession being nine points of the law, declined at first to give way to the intruder, and when he did flung up his heels and let out in a manner which caused his disturber to feel remarkably thankful that he was not a few feet nearer. It is time the borough took 'some effectual step to put an end to what has become a nuis'ance.
''Eileen" writes:—The sacred concert given from the balcony of Mr. Rhodes' Hotel on Sunday evening by the Caledonian Company, under the management of Mr. Jock Willis, was a great musical treat. "Nazareth." "The Holy City" and "O Divine Redeemer" were gfven by the company in fine style, and two very beautiful trios were also rendered. The Mayor (Mr. Masters) would notl grant permission to the management to hold a sacred concert in the Town Hall, which is to be much regretted, as' Mr. Willis generously offered the proceeds iiie concert to the local ho-nit:il, and; with the Government's snbsidv. added. would have proved a very handsome donation towards the two' new wards so urgentlv needed. It is hard to understand the Mayor's object in refusing Mr. Willis' generous offer, especially for s'o good a purpose, and only last week '.everyone was asked to respond liberally ,to tlie funds on Hospital Saturday. The Mayor's refusal *o grant nermksion to the management is a solid loss of quite £4O to the hospital.
