HOCKEY
A Taranuki Western District Hockey Association has been formed at Opunako, the clubs being Pihama, Egmont, Opunake and Opua. The competitions in the Southern Division cominenced on Thursday, when Eltham met Hawera at the latter place and suffered defeat by the good margin of 10 goals to 1. England defeated Scotland at Pittodrie.'m Aberdeen, by 3 goals to nil, and thereby gained the honors of the hockey season in the United Kingdom, having previously defeated Ireland and Wales. England had the better of the first half, and were leading by 2 goals to nil at the interval. Tn the second half Scotland attacked vigorously, and only just missed -■cori:i"- mi several'occasions; just before (he c:HI England shot the third and last ..-(■al Tait and Powell, the respective »'oal-keepers, phivcd brilliantly, wnilst Tinrt. at eentre-lnlf. did many fine things for Scotland. The great Shoveller did not play for England, and Corbett was chosen in his place.
