STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.

(From our Resident Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. 'Now that a Chamber of Commerce 3ias been formed here it is to be hoped it will receive the practical support of the whole community. The best means of showing this is by joining the Chamber and taking an interest in its working. On the first point it is essential that any Chamber, to do good work, must have funds, for it would be obviously unfair to ask those who are giving their time for the common good to have also to put their hands in their pockets to provide the finances. The subscription is a low one and should not prevent any business man from joining. The second point is almost- as important. There are frequently people who, though they take no active part in any movement, are always ready to carp and criticise and kill with faint praise the projects that their more energetic fellows ai*e putting forward. It should be the duty of all business people who become acquainted with anything which needs amendment to tell the Executive of the Chamber of the facts, and put them in the position of bringing the matter before the responsible authorities. If support of this nature is forthcoming there is very little doubt that the newly formed Chamber will be able to accomplish a vast amount of good work for town and country. There was a field day at the S.M. Court to-day. A number of parents were fined for not sending their children to school regularly. Numerous civil cases were decided, and for a breach of the borough by-laws in allowing vehicles to stand in the street opposite his stables F. Gooch was fined 10s and costs. For being on licensed premises after legaj hours P. Jones was fined 10s and costs.

Mr. F. M. Harlow has' been appointed! bailiff at the local Court as from the be-j ginning, of next month. ' A drapery firm here has received several cases of goods which show traces of cargo broaching. I I regret to hear that Mr. C Colson is 1 seriously ill. It was thought that as "Don" Cam-i eron was unable to get away with" the football team to Australia, jack Stohr would have an excellent chance of the trip, and it was therefore rather a Surprise tii- local enthusiasts to hear that Wil-on had been selected to fill the vacancy. Apart from his attacking powers, Stohr's abilities as a place kick should gain him a place in any side. The Chief Commissioner of Dairying has replied to the 'Stratford Committee! that he is' unable to spare an expert toi assist in the work of the dairy classes at the Technical School.

[ The firebell rang an alarm atl o'clock| this morning,, the cause being an outbreak in the block generally known as! York Chambers on the eastern side of J Broadway. The fire appears to have] originated in the premises occupied by| Messrs'. Coolc and Sons, tailors, though when the alarm was given the flames had gained a good hold on the adjoining premises. The principal damage was done to Messrs. Cook and Sons' shop, which was completely .gutted. The office occupied by Mr. J." H. Thompson was considerably damaged by fire and water. and the office of Mr. J. D. Healy, on the upper door of the building was also damaged. The other adjoining premises suffered slightly. Particulars of the insurances are as follows:—In the Sun office. Abraham Cook, stock and fittings, £200; J. W. Simmons, furniture and fittings, ,£SO: J. H. Thompson, furniture and fittings. £4B; York Chambers. £7OO on building: Bondall. £IOO on stock. In the Australian Alliance, Hernial], £IOO on stock. In the Commercial Union, £l5O on Cook's building.
