FARMERS' UNION.
NORTH CANTERBURY UNION. By Telegraph-r-Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The conference of the North Canterbury Farmers' Union was concluded today. Mr. 0. Clothier was elected, and Mr. P. Evans and Mr. F. G. Horrell were, appointed delegates to the Domwiion Conference. Remits from the executive of the Taranafci Farmers' Union, and from the Ashburton and Rakaia branches regarding the alleged improper methods' pursued by the State Fire Office in getting business, was agreed to. A re-i mit was also agreed to that charitable aid boards should receive the fees paid by licensees of hotels. HAWKE'S BAl' CONFERENCE. Hastings, Last Night. The annual conference of the Hawke's Bay provincial district of the Farmers' Union was held at Hastings to-day. Three branches were represented. Mr. A. L. D. Fraser, who was voted to the 'chair in the unavoidable absence of the President, delivered an address. Mr. Fraser said it appeared to him there never was a time in the history of MewZealand when it was more necessary for farmers to unite than at the present time, and he therefore considered it was regrettable to see a falimg-off of interest in the Union in various parts of the Dominion. There was, for instance, still much to do and to watch regarding the land question, especially in view of the hindrances that were put in the way of lioth Europeans and Natives settling en the land.
Mr. Eustace Lane was elected Presi dent.
The remits agreed to for forwarding to the Dominion Conference incluaed one in favor of co-operative meat-freez-ing l>y farmers. It was also decided that a sub-committee be formed to wait on the local freezing companies and ask them to classify lambs into three classes. and to advertise A, B, and C grade prices. SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE. lnvercargill, Last Niaht. At the conference of the Southland branch of the Farmers' Union, the 10Ilowing were among the remits adopted: That in view ot the statement of the Prime Minister that a Land Bill containing the same principles as that introduced last se.ssion and withdrawn will he again introduced, this conference, places on record ithat no legislation will be satisfactory to the Farmers' Union which does not contain the right of all tenants of the Crown to the freehold option. 'That under compulsory military service some system of .payment of men serving should be made from the public .purse, as it would oe unfair for employers to pay wages. That farmers borrowing money from the Advances to Settlers" Office should be at liberty to effect fire insurance in any sound eJlice ,they chose. That a strong .protest .be made against the,system compelling the sixth standard pupils in country schools attending at centres for examinations.
