A meeting for the purpose of forming a Chamlier of Commerce was held tonight at the Borough Council Chambers, the Mayor presiding. Twenty residents wore present. It was derided to form the Chamber. The following ollicers were elected:—President, Mr. J. Masters (Mayor); vice-presidents, Messrs. S. H. James and W. 11. Young; executive, Messrs. W. A. Hewitt. N. .1. King, S. Ward, .1. .McMillan, \Y. I'. Kirkwood. and H. C. Cargill. The appointment of secretary was referred to the executive. The subscription was fixed at 10s (Id. At a subsequent meeting of the executive it was decided to ask Mr. .1. B. Richards to undertake the duties of secretary. Mr. '. Ward brought up the matter of ti v time'"!>!;• lo Te Wera. Reference was also made to the delay in transit of igoods between the breakwater at New Plymouth and Stratford station. The chairman and Messrs. Ward and Cargill were appointed a committee to enquire into the matter. The question of procuring the services of gentlemen residing in the country districts who won) 1 keep the Chamber posted as to 'lie w-int* and requirements of tin: dis'rict evoked sume discussion. Finally wn : decided to ask Messrs. W. A. M.Catchall (Wh-ingamomona), T. R. Moiiiisey (Makahiii. E. Walters ('Dougla-0. j. Maxwell (Puniv.'.iakaui. ii. A. Marehaut (C.trd'ilV). and W. Swadling (Ka.ponga) to undertake the duties. Reference was made to the desirableness of securing a letter delivery twice daily to that part of the town adjacent to Broadway, and to the lack of facilities for the pubiic at the post office, and also to the necessity of an alteration in tile existing docket svstcm in telephonic coniniunicati' n. The chairman and Messrs. Hewitt, .lames, and V. -ird were appointed a sub-committee to report at the iK'\'t meeting
Mr. lvirkwood considered the Chamber should have full information as to t'lie number of men employed on the railway line. —There was some discussion on tlie matter, but no notion was taken. . It was decided to write to the Minister of Lam!s asking him when the Whakakai-hu-waka and the, Taumatamakoe blocks (75,000 acres near Puniwhakau) are to be opened. There was some discussion on the necessity of securing a road from Omona to Douirlas through the forest reserve. It was decided tnat no action lie taken until the member for>the district and the settlers had been communicated with.
The next meeting will 'be held on Monday, 6th June.
Mr. H. S. Priestley, the well known cabinet maker, met with a nasty accident yesterday. He was riding a bicycle down Brecon street and carrying abundle of blind rollers under bis arm. Me had no brake on the machine and, noiin: down hill, the rollers commenced' to .slip from under his arm. eventually one sliding in between the smokes of the front wheel. Mr. Priestley, was, thrown ofi" the machine, sustaining numerous abrasion-' on the rice a.nd arm, the injuries to his face requiring medical attention and the insertion of several stitches. I
After the famine the feast. For several menths .past theatrical shows have been few and far between. Now there is going to be •< glut. Last night the. Hall was occupied bv the Caledonians', who bv the way give a very good show. To-night there is another entertainment: Tuesday the Hamilton-Maxwell Company appear; on Thursday the Jubilee Singers are due; and on Friday the Ellwood trio visit here. ■
Next Court day here should he a busy one, as 84 cases are set down for hearing.
