A SERIOUS BI.OW TO BRITISH TRADE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received May 20, 11.10 p.m. London. May 20. Mr. Wilcox, secretary of the China. Arisucialion. in a letter to the Times, which the Times describes as important and convincing, shows that the new Japanese tariff will .be a serious blow to British trade. The rates 011 many articles .are doubled, several are trebled, and the rates 011 the large majority of those articles that are clnelly imported from Britain are increased. The rates, when enforced, will compel many of the British firms trading in Japan to abandon business there,.' Mr. Wilcox quotes Count Komura's speech published in the Japan Mail of the 31st January, in which Jie stated that England, being a perfectly free trade country. Had no means of purchasing tariff concessions from other nations.
