Veryard, belonging to the China Inland Mission at Umngsha, in a vivid narrative forwarded to friends, gives particulars of the missionaries' narrow escape on the 14th April. The rioters, according to the statements 01 the wife of a Chinese official, intended to kill the Governor, but as they were unable to directly accomplish this, they decided to kill the foreigners to ensure the Governor's death, which, they imagined, would be the punishment demanded by the Powers.
