CARTER'S NO. 4 GOLDEN GIFT TEA COMPETITION. PLUCKING .pluckers are suspended by ropes from their heads, and into which they cast the leaves over their shoulders, hold about 141b when full. At the end of each row of trees is placed a large transport basket into which the leaves are emptied from time to time as the (baskets become full. Women are preferred to men for this work, and earn as much as 4d per day. Very care fully chosen js each leaf or shoot that falls into the basket. Plucking is a most important branch of the teaplanter's business, and requires careful teaching and constant supervision. Only the young and succulent leaves can be used in the manufacture, and the younger the leaf the finer the quality of the tea, so that if a specially delicate quality is desired only the bud and two extreme leaves of each shoot will be taken, whereas if a larger yield is wanted as many as four leaves may be plucked from the top of the shoot downwards, the result being a poorer quality of the manufactured article. The baskets are emptied two or three times during the day and the leaf conveyed to the factory; at four i o'clock the pluclkers cease work and [ carry their "baskets to the factory, where they sort over the leaf upon mats spread on the ground and cast out any very coarse leaf that may have been accidentally plucked." REASON 4. —Golden Gift Tea has that lovely flavor because only the choicest leaves are picked for its blend; the coarse rough leaves are thrown out for lower grade teas. G. GARTER The People's Grocer, DEVON STREET, ■NEW PLYMOUTH.
