Shaw was sentenced to two years' lm-: prisonment for arson in connection witu the Fitzroy explosion, whereby his accomplice lost his life. THE HARPER CASES. Received May 25, II p.m. Melbourne, Last Night. The hearing of the case of the Crown against Robt. Harper and others for conspiracy, commences on Monday. A REQUEST REFUSED. Received May 25, 11 p.m. Melbourne, Last Night. The Federal Government has declined to accede to Captain Scott's request to grant £IOOO towards the South Pole expedition. Mr. E. L. Bachelor (Minister for General Affairs) states that tiie imperial Government had contributed £20,000 to the expedition, while Sir Ernest Shackleton did not receive any help from the Imperial Government. The conditions of the two expeditions were therefore not the same.
THE PERICLES ROCK. n . Sydney, May 25. Official advices from Fremantle state that the rock whereon .the Pericles struck has not, as previously stated been located. CLOSING HOTELS. Melbourne, May 25. The shipping aarents have decided to increase the freight rates on frozen meat to %d per lb. from August.
