ELIXIR OF LIFE.
NEW REMEDY TO PROCURE LONGEVITY. In a lecture delivered at Paris, Dr. Doyen, the well-juiown surgeon, declared he had discovered the ''elixir of long life." He called it "mycolysine," because it dissolved germs, and would, he claimed, annihilate infectious diseases. A minute study of certain albuminoids, such as are contained in ferments of wine and cider, led Dr. Doyen to the conclusion that these substances have the .power of rapidly destroying toxic microbes by stimulating the phagocites (or "defenders") in the blood. Dr. Doyen statea, further, that the new method of treatment had been successful in chronic • diseases, suoli as rheumatism, cancer, and consumption. To pressmen who called upon him for further details Dr. Doyen supplied the following:— "The exact substances, which I have called phaxogenous colloids, are albumens extracted from natural ferments—the one precipi table by heat and the others soluble by heat like peptones. These substances are stimulants of phagocytose to such a degree that their absorption by the mouth, or, in grave cases, by subcutaneous injection, suffices to prevent or cure the greater part of acute infectious diseases. "Thanks to these new agents, 1 can promise, the disappearance of almost all acute maladies of trie respiratory organs, of the digestive tubes, and of the skin—among the latter I may mention acne, furuncoe. impetigo, and eczema. REMARKABLE RESULTS. "We have had remarkable results in scarlatina, measles, typhoid fever, phlebitis, infectious arthritis, and cerebral spinal meningitis. My method has also been applied to the treatment of chronic diseases -by combining it, in the case of tuberculosis and cancer, with tuberculine and microbian vaccine. "The results are demonstrative to-day and are based on hundreds of cases. The use of mycolysine will completely transform the practice of medicine and surgery; and its importance from the social point of view is enormous. Consider that at the present moment there exists no certain result except for the vaccine of Jenner, the Pasteur vaccination against hydrophobia, the serotherapy against diphtheria, and the preventive serotherapy of tetanus. "These maladies are, as a matter of fa-ct, rather rare. I, on the contrary, am 'giving immunity at the present moment from almost ;>]] the other maladies put together. For acute maladies the proof is so easy that, in a big hospital, not more than four weeks are necessary | in order to obtain a long series of demon-1 strative observations. "Yes, it is a wonderful elixir. Why. even for a cold in the head—coryza, as we doctors call it—you can cure it in its early stages .n half an hour by taking three tablespoonfuls 6f mycolysine. In the same way with angina—you go ; o bed with a sore throat and wake up tlio next morning cured. "The striking thing about mycolysine is that it is absolutely harmless; il comes from ferments such as those of beer, wine, cider, the manufacture of alcohol, lactic ferments which are used for the preparation of food and hygienic drinks. "If any English hospital desires to make experiments I am ready to send them all that is necessary for the purpose, together with instructions. If the experiments I "have made are recognised —as I feel sure they will be-*-! shall take steps so that the poorest ami humblest may benefit from the results of my labors."
