TELEPHONE SERVICE.

How many of us havS any conception of the value or the extent of the splendid telephone service in the Tarawa ki district from New Plymouth centre. There are 400 direct connections with 3 . business establishments and (private persons, with 71' bureau offices distributed all over the province (like the spots on a lady's veil). This wonderful iielp in the "speeding up" of commerce, the almost Divine means of life saving in times of sickness or accident, through being able to communicate with the best medical skill at a minute's' nonce, is scarcely understood or appreciated ■by the great majority of us. The extent of country covered by the service is scarcely realised by the average school pupil or the public. Prom New Plymouth in a northeasterly direction we can speak to Awakino (39 miles), easterly to Malioenui (78 miles); south-east to Whangamomona (70 miles), Tahora (S3 miles). Pohokura (02 miles), Huiakama (53 miles), southerly to Wanganui (10!) miles). Mokoia (73 miles), Patea (00 miles). Hawei'a (50 miles); south-west-erly, Manaia (58 miles), Inaha (03 miles); westerly. Opunake (3!) miles), Ra'hotu (30 miles), Okato (10 miles); with an inner circle of Waitara (11 miles), Urenui (20 miles), Inglewood (17 miles), Stratford (30 miles), Ka>ponga (42 miles). Matapu (51 miles). Oaknni (8 miles). Omata (4 miles). Scattered among those named are 50 other stations, all within speaking communication with New Plymouth. We can easily see that E. P. Webster's' office will be kept busy receiving entries for the Winter Show until Saturday next, when all entries close at 9 p.m. Show from June S to 11. RING UP 21.
