There were large fields and interesting racing and no spills for the opening day of the meeting. Boanerges, finishing brilliantly, scored a meritorious victory in the Borough Handicap. Lovell made all the running in the Wanganui Steeple. Jack Pot drew level at the lats jump, and bumped Lovell badly'in the run home, winning an interesting race in the last fifty yards. Oryx finished fast, and if roperly ridden, would have won. Pharos broke down. Faunus hopped out quickly, and won the Electric Handicap all the way. Golden Loop made a big effort to get up in the straight, catching all but the winner. Nightmare made all the running in the Hack Hurdles. Merry Lawn took the lead at the distance, winning easily. Maharanui and Clemency, who were both heavily tracked, ran last all the way. Aorangi, Audax, Maku and Gold Bird were the best backed in the Century Hurdles. Wimmera led all the way, romping home. Waitapu ran well, finishing fifth. The Taranaki owned Clemora paid the biggest price of the day, getting up in the last few s'trides of the Connelly Handicap and" beating the favorite, Maori King. Penates was done -with after six furlongs, and Waipaku led into the straight, but faded away at the inside distance. Ambrosian 'held the handy position throughout the Puru Handicap, taking- the lead on entering the straight and winning easily. Somali shaped disappointingly in the Hack Hurdles, and was never prominent. Jack Pot and Wimmera were the double, and being well hacked, s'hook up the peneiliers considerably.
