News has been received of the death ] at Capetown of Mr. James Price, an 1 honorary member of the Cabinet, who 1 was travelling for the benefit of his < health. PROFESSOR COOK. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, May 23. 1 Professor Cook, who died at Marion, ( where his son practices as a solicitor, was' one of the first three (professors of Canterbury College, Professors MacMillan Brown and Bickerton being the' other two. They came out to New Zealand at the end of 1874, and set to work with enthusiasm to build up a great educational institution. ' Professor Cook's subject was mathematics, t Professor Brown took Latin and Greek, and Professor Bickerton took chemistry and physics. These three men were largely responsible for the pre-eminence of Canterbury College in the early days. At the end of the seventies Professor i Brown took up English and history, which he bplieved to be of particular importance in a young country, Professor Haslain being brought out to fill the chair of classics. Some of the most brilliant University men in New Zealand passed through .■ Professor Cook's hands, including p lO - ! fessor Rutherford, the authority on • radio-activity. Professor Cook retired a couple of years ago owing to failing health. i
