STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Stratford, Saturday Night. Mr, A. M. Power, who recently sold Ms property at Waipukiu, hag .purchased a section on the Mountain road from Mr. Brannigan, and proposes residing there as soon as a 'house is 'built. It is a good sign to see that .people ,who have retired are taking up their residence in the town instead of leaving the district, as 'has been the case in tne past. I hear that the Wanganni Education Board ;has determined, provided the expenditure is sanctioned: by the auditor, to make an annual grant of £5 towards the Bayly Memorial Scholarship. To-day has been Hospital Saturday, and the "Red Cross" canvassers have been in evidence all day. The pedestrian cannot go very lar before a 'box is placed in front of him. and he is asked to assist a good cause. It might be a suggestion to the powers that be for use on a •future occasion that badges giving the wearer immunity from canvassers be told. It would save people who have contributed being worried, and might lead to an increased reevnue. The business pe'ople were waited on during the 'week, and have responded liberally. Boxes have been sent out to Te Wera, and Irom the report of those who brought them in the men on the line ■have not been backward with their contributions. ■Good progress is being made with the erection of the station buildings at Njgatimaru. The work of blocking the Pohokura tunnel 'will be completed on Wednesday. It will take a month cleaning up the tunnel before! the lines can lie laid. When this is accomplished 1 the work of laying the lines and ballasting as far as the Pohokura station, some four miles past the tunnel, will be put in hand.. Mr. W. Bright, of Whangamomona, is suffering from paralysis of the face, and has been admitted to a private hospital in New Plymouth. The school-children collected £3 18s 2d for the hospital. Captain F. Mace, of Oakura,. was on a visit to Stratford yesterday. RUGS, OVERCOATS, BLANKETS. A TRIO OF SEASONABLE OFFERINGS. At the Melbourne's great stores the ebb and flow of merchandise, almost as ceaseless as the ocean tides, seem to sound an endless refrain "Buy and Sell—Buy and Cell—and as we Buy, we Sell." Of our many important trade transactions only a few receive specific -mention. Results, however, show in the many unclerprice offerings we malte—one little item often representing a purchase of 'hundreds of .pounds. Here are some i winter values that simply defy competition: —Men's dressy raincoats, dark and .mid'grey shades, full lengths, padded shoaMers, very stvlish go Ads, splendidly eut and finished, 255, 29s 6d, 355, 39s 6d; men's latest fawn macintoshes, English cut, with full flowing skirt, made with the new sleeves and with Prussian collar, 355; boys' and youths' warm overcoats, three-quarter and full length styles, .principally in dark serviceable shades, 8s 6cl to*23s 6d; heavy striped 1 /bust rugs, 5s lid, 9s Od, to 14s 6d; Kaiapoi all-wool bush rugs, large size, Ss lid; Kaiapoi fringed travelling rugs, ■lovely designs and qualities, 15s Gd, worth 255; blue blankets, heavy and warm, 8s lid .pair, three-quarter size 12s 6d .pair; white Witney blankets, lis 6d and 15s 6d pair; grand line of pure Mosgiel blankets, heaviest and •whitest blanket on the market, threequarter size 17s (M pair, lull doable-bed size 23s 6d pair.
