Alexander Young, a decrepit old man of seventy years, appealed in Court today on « charge of stealing £l2 4s from the cash-box at trie Whakapara Post Office. He wia.s sentenced to three months' imprisonment without hard labor. AX ELECTiOX PETITION*. Aslhburton, Thursday. .A ease of considerable interest regarding local bodies' elections came before Mil*. \V. G. Day till is morning in the nature of a petition lodged by .lames Dellow. farmer, of Muylie.ldj whose nominaition paper as m candidate in the Rangkata Road Board election tod been .refused by the returning officer on the ground tlua.t it iwms invalid by reason of not being dated. The evidence snowed that Dellow ,had 'landed in a nomination paper endorsed by two ratepayers, and that the document tare no date, .Subsequently Dellow wnt to the returning ollicer and demanded the return of the paper, prior to closing of the nominations, for the purpose of inserting the date. The returning ollicer refused to .return the paper, and when a. new paper was brought to the Board's oflice on the day nominations closed the ollicer iwias absent at noon, ona afterwards he refused to accept it as valid. The Magistrate said he had no option but to grant the petition; in fact, that the nomination .paper was not dated did not invalidate it. Tine election of the Boa.nl was therefore declared void, but costs were not allowed against tne returning officer.
