"I was very much struck with the large amount of bush lands in the hands of the Maoris, which are neither being cultivated by them nor leased to the pakehns," says Bishop Averill, of Waiapu. "The Maoris are beginning now to grant leases. I saw several blocks which bad been token up by Europeans, and it struck me that it was a good thing for the Maoris, because the settlers will utilise their labor, and they will bo given employment. This will be much better for them than their present mode of life. One difficulty is that the Maoris are very anxious to retain all the coast lands, while the Europeans iwiho take up leases are also desirous of securing beautiful frontages to the sea.
