AMUSEMENTS.

HEWITT PICTURES. Last night there was a good audience at the Theatre Royal to witness the change of films screened by Hewitt's. The new set is a well-varied one, including as it does educational, scenic, dramatic, land comic subjects. The introductory picture takes toe audience over some very interesting French scenery in "Picturesque Aivvergne." "The Sea' ? is another very fine scenic film showing a number of sea nymphs disporting •themselves in t'he briny. A very goou idea is given of interesting work in a subject entitled "Tambourine-making." Several excellent dramatic subjects are dealt with, chief amongst -which'is "The Restoration." "A Brave Irish Lass' is another entertaining drama. The comics are of extra interest this week. "An Attempt to Smash a Bank" fairly glistens with exciting incident, while "Fool's Head Pays a Visit" may be relied on to make the proverbial cat laugh. Altogether the list of films is right up to t<he usual standard. A feature of the entertainment was the firstrate programme of orchestral music. The films will be shown again to-night. ORCHESTRAL CONCERT. The New Plymouth Orchestral Union will .give a concert in Whiteley Hall this evening. The orchestra has been in active preparation for some time past, aim, judging "by tihe final rehearsal held on Tuesday night, those who attend the concert are in for a treat. Three high standard overtures, ' : 2ampa," "Stradella," iand "Light Cavalry," are included in the iprogTamme, a>lso selections from "The Belle of New York" and "II Trovatore," and two movemenlts from the incidental music of "The Merchant of Venice." The vocal items have .been well selected, and will be rendered by Misses Gideon, Florence Ward, and Clarice Buckman (until lately one of the with Pollard's Opera Company), and ilr. Nixon. The Liedertafel are also assisting. Other features will he a violiin solo hy Mr. A. L. Cooke and a cornet solo bv the honorary conductor of the orchestra, Mr. C. H. Lawn. With ■such an array of talent It is safe to predict a successful concert and a packed 'house. The (proceeds will be in aid of the union's funds for providing music iand other expenses.
