The Centrevdlle negro convicts had been leased by the fswi.te to the Red Feaither Coal Company. They were confined in a large stockade, and were looked after l>v armed guards. A negro applied a match to the stockade, hoping to escape in the confusion. The convicts tried to rush through the fire, but ithe guards shot one of them. The others, appalled at this, huddled back to the stockade. As the flames encroached they made another dash for safety. Another volley was tired oy the guards, mho wounded several. Many were burnt *to death while struggling through the blazing timbers. Gruesome details are given of the blasphemous shrieks and writhing of the convicts in the death-trap. Thirty-five were burned to death, while several were shot and many wounded.
