KING EDWARD'S FUNERAL
GORGEOUS PROCESSION CONTEMPLATED. MAGNIFICENT NAVAL, MILITARY, AND OFFICIAL DISPLAY. MARTIAL POMP AND ROYAL SPLENDOR. By Cable—Press Association—Copyngut Received May 17, 11 p.r.i. London, May 17. The headquarters staff of the Army Council and 'the Board of Admiralty, the Field-Marshals, Admirals of the Fleet, Indian orderly officers, and King Edward's aides-de-camp head the funeral procession. The massed hands of the Brigade of Guards and thirty-two of the King's Comipany of Grenadiers march immediately before the coffin, which will be flanked by equerries and twenty-four Yeomen of the Guard.
The coffin will be covered with a cream-white jpall. The C'rowta regalia emd tihe insignia of the Garter will be followed by the Royal Standard borne by Lifeguardsmen. Then will come King George in Admiral's uniform, alone, followed oy Princes Edward and Albert abreast in ■aval cadets' uniform, the King of Denmark, the Duke of Connaught, and the King of Norway abreast of them. After these will come the other Royalties and foreign Court officials, land next King Edward's physicians afoot. Then the suites of the Kings of Norway and Denmark and other Princes. Finally will come nine carriages with the Dowager-Queen Alexandra in the first carriage and Queen Mary in the second, the other Royal ladies following. Received May 17, 11.35 .p.m. London, May 17. "Big Ben" will he tolled at intervals of fifteen seconds. Sixty-eight guns will be fired at St. James' Bark during the (progress of the procession. Ten thousand infantry and two thousand cavalry, including the Brigade of Guards, the Household Cavalry, and the Naval Brigade, will line the streets with bowed heads and weapons reversed. The massed bands of the Brigade of Guards when leaving the ( Palace will play Beethoven's Funeral March. Reaching Marlborough House gate, forty pipers of the Scots Guards will play the lament "The Flowers of .the Forest." . The band of the Duke of York's Own will unite in playing Chopin's Funeral March, and along Downing-street 'wall play "The Dead March in Saul," continuing playing until the coffin i 9 carried to Westminster Hall, where the Archbishop of Canterbury and Lord ton, the Duke of Norfolk, and the Hon. Lewis H'arcourt will receive the coffin. A Herald Pursuivant of Arms will then conduct the Navy and Army officers to the steps at the end of the hall. The Lords and Commbners, after assembling at their respective Houses, will walk in (procession to the hall. The Chancellor, robed, will head the Peers, who will be grouped on one side of the hall, the Speaker, robed, being in their midst, whilst the Commoners will form up on the opposite side. The King of Arms ■will lead during the procession, and the Garter King of Arms and the Keeper of the Black Rod will lead at Westminster. Lord Carrington, the Primate of England, the Grenadiers, and leomen of the Guard will bear the coffin to the catafalque. ■ Received May 18, 18.15 a.m. London, May 17.
King George and the Royal mourners will !be grouped at the ihead of the coffin with gentlemen-at-arms on either side, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Duke of Norfolk and Lord Oarrington at the foot. \ The Dean of Westminster and Archdeacon Wilberforce will assist at the service, which will include selected prayers and the 23rd Psalm. The Abbey choir and the children of the Chapels Royal will stand on the top steps leading to St. Stephen's porch and will be under Sir Frederick Bridges.. The ciioir will sing Spohr's "Blest are the Departed," and. all the vocal items will be unaccompanied except the final hymn, <; 0 God, our Help in Ages Past," which will ibe accompanied by ten instrumentalists of the Brigade of Guards. After the service the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Duke of Norfolk and officers at ai;ms will conduct King George and the Royal mourners to the entrance hall.
There will be no procession on the return journey. Memorial services will be held on evefcy worship ion Friday and every prison chapel in England and Wales. THE KING AND QUEEN OVATIONED. WREATHS PLACED ON A HUGE CANOPY. FOR HOLIDAY-MAKERS TO VIEW THEM. Received May 17, 10.25 -p.m. London, May 17. Thousands of subdued holiday-makers thronged the outside of Buckingham Palace and ovationed King George and Queen Mary when driving in Pall Mall. Their Majesties repeatedly acknowledged the demonstrations. The Royalties' servants iw<hose duties prevented them doing so on Sunday attended yesterday's service in the Throne Room. King George ordered the wreaths already in Windsor Castle to be placed on a huge canopy in the Dean's cloisters in order to allow the holiday-makers to uricw them. THE KING AND MR. ROOSEVELT. DANISH SYMPATHY. London, May 16. The King gave Mr. Roosevelt an audience for an hour at Marlborough House. The ex-President also visited the Queen-Mother at Buckingham Palace, and the throne room, where also 350 members of various Royal households and diplomatic corps witnessed the ly-insr-in-state. Thousands of Danes, including a number of high officials, have started for London. Thousands of Danish women have signed an address of sympathy to Queen Alexandra. The inhabitants of Denmark are sending a gold wreath and shield weighing nine pounds. Kin? Ferdinand of Bulgaria will attend the funeral. MEMORIAL SERVICE IN PARIS. Paris, May 16. President Fallieres will attend a service at the dh'Uirrfi of the British Embassy, at which the Academy of Pine Arts, the Academy of Sciences, the French Academy, and other bodies will also be represented.
SERVICES IN AUSTRALIA.
Sydney, May 117. A combined naval and military memorial service will be held in Centennial Park, and a public memorial service will he held in the domain on Friday. Services will also be held at all the churches at various hours of the day. Melbourne, May 17. A military service will be held at Parliament House steips on Friday. The troops will afterwards march through the principal streets. BATTALION ORDERS. Major Malone, Officer Commanding the 4th Battalion Wellington (Infantry) Territorials, has issued the following battalion orders:— Funeral of His late Majesty the King. —Where memorial services are held at their 'respective centres on Friday, 20th inst., companies will attend such service and take part therein. Dress.—Full dress (including helmets, arms and side arms). Headquarters Companies. Headquarters companies and Garrison Band will parade at the Drill Hall, New Plymouth, on Friday, 20th inst., at 2 p.m. Dress as above. Field Manoeuvres.—The field manoeuvres previously fixed for the 20th inst. will be held on June 3rd next. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. Tisch) received the following wires from the Premier yesterday morning:—"As inquiry has been made regarding Uie hour the memorial service should be held on Friday I desire to inform you that in Wellington arrangements have been made to hold this at 2.30 p.m., and it is suggested that this hour would probably suit all centres throughout the Dominion. If this is done all such services in New Zealand will in such cases be held simultaneously." "I have arranged that where memorial services are held through the Dominion on Friday the 20th the military forces, including Defence Cadets, shall attend, and I will be glad if you will confer with the officer commanding thei district. So far as the School Cadets are concerned the officer commanding these cadets has been requested to co-operate with you."
