At the Fire Brigade meeting last night Foreman J. Clai.- was (presented with a twio years' service tor, making nine year-;' service in all. A Press Association cablegram received this morning states that Lord and Lady Gladstone have arrived at Capetown. The Hon. Henry Wigram, who is on a visit to Auckland, has ibeen laid up with an attack of bronchitis since his arrival, but is now in a convalescent stage. At Tataramaika last night Mr. J» Arndt, who is leaving for Te Aroha, was entertained at, a social by tlie residents of the district and presented with a travelling rug. Colonel F. Fox, an officer of the Indian Army, wfto is interested in astronomy, and who came out to Holwrt to witness the eclipse of the sun. arrived from Tasmania by the CorinWiic on Monday. A Press iwiire from Fremantle state» that Lady Dudley, wife, of the Commonwealth Governor-General, who underwent a serious operation in England, is returning by the steamer Osterley, her health being greatly improved. Mo-srs. Arthur Morton, Jacob Marx, and J. B. Murdoek were passengers to Wellington yesterday. Tliev were invited from Taranaki by the Stock Department to attend a conference at Wellington to consider the necessity of the pasteurisation of skim milk. Mr. W. H. Keasberry, who 'has been secretary of the Cape Egmont Co-opera-tive Dairy Company, Pungarehu, for the past thirteen years, has resigned hj» position, owing to the state of 'his health necessitating his being outside more. He will still, however, retains the management of the company's co-operative store. There will probably be a keen fight for the seat rendered vacant by Mr. Dannie's death (states a Press wire). Candidates mentioned include Mr. A. Myers. ex-Mayor; Mr. H. W. Northcroft, ex-S.M.; Mr. Burr, chairman of the Board of Education.; and Mr. Nicholson, who unsuccessfully contested Hrey Lynn 'against the Hon. George Fowlds. Mr. James Francis Leighton, an old pioneer of Auckland, died on Saturday morning, aged eighty years. He left England in the ship Investigator in 1853, and after working in Sydney for » couide of years, came on to New Zealand. He landed in this country on 10th Mav. IS.io, so that Hie had just com- • nlcted hi* fifty-fifth year of'residence here.
