STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Resident Correspondent ) Stratford, Last Night. Mr. Hopkins, a farmer residing on the Toko road, met with a very nasty accident on Saturday. He was trying to catch a young horse, and to this purpose had driven it into a small yard. The animal objecting to capture tried to break out of the yard, and in its struggles smashed a .portion of the fencing. A piece of rail struck Mr. Hopkins in the face, breaking and severely lacer-j ating his nose. Mr. Hopkins came to Stratford, where his injuries were attended to by Dr. lOarbery. Mr. K. Clarke, of the firm of Hunter and Clarke, whilst driving from Whangamomona yesterday, was coming down the saddle when his horse was startled by the neighs of another horse which had fallen over the 'bank and severely injured itself. >Mr. 'Clarke's horse became unmanageable, and the 'buggy was upset, Mr. Clarke and Mrs. 'Suter and child, who were accompanying him, be-! ing thrown out. INo serious injuries were sustained by the occupants of the ' l)u ggy, though the child was stunned for a few moments. The vehicle was considerably damaged, both shafts being broken.
In consequence of the illness of the Bishop of Auckland the Rev. Favell has been calledi to Auckland to take up work in that city. During his absence, wliich will probably be for two months, the Rev. A. H. Colviile will .be in charge of the parish. Mr. E. Deacon, of the staff of the local National Bank, has resigned his position in order to join the firm of Holah Bros., of New Plymouth.
So far eighty-four licenses have been issued by the Stratford Acclimatisation Society.
Mr. and (Mrs. A. Clayton, who have been on a visit to Christchurch, returned home on Saturday night. Mr. Clayton's health has considerably benefited iby the change. An effort is being made to resuscitate the Stratford. Brass Band.
A meeting of the Management Committee of the Taranaki Rugby Union will be held on Thursday night. I am (pleased to notice on 'the Estimates of the Borough Council that a sum of £250 is provided for kerbing the footpaths. I understand that the Council propose setting aside a sum every year for this work.
| General regret will be felt at the news of the death of Rita, daughter of Mrs. A. Bayly, which occurred at Auckland on Saturday. The funeral will take tit Stratford on Wednesd&y. The general opinion in regard to the New Zealand footbrnll team to visit Australia is that it is a strong side. " >th the forwards there can be little exception taken, but locally there is a feeling that the Okaiawa forward Crowley has earned his place. Mynott's inclusion was rather a surprise, at it was thought that Stohr would Jbe preferred.
