The story of a race of white Indians who have red hair, in the interior of Sou Hi America, was told .by Major P. H. Fawcett recently at a meeting 01 the Royal Geographical Society. ''l have met half a dozen men who <le.cla.re positively that they have caught a glimpse of such people," said Major Fanvcett. "Other statements have been made as to the existence of a, similar race with blue eyes, They have a name, 'Monpliegon,' or 'Bats,' meaning the people who travel to hunt at night and hide during the day. lam told that in Paraguay there is a tribe so shy as to be quite beyond communication, while in another race the men and the women talk separate languages. Amended telephone regulations are gazetted, providing that for connections over three miles in length the subscriber will be' charged at ordinary rates on the first three miles. For the portion beyond that distance he will be required to pay the cost of erection of the line and an annual maintenance charge of £1 for each quarter of a mile or° fraction thereof, if the wire is on an existing line of poles, or if the wire is already in existence and the subscriber has not been required to .pay the cost of erection the charge will be 15s for each quarter of ia mile or fraction thereof. After the expiration of three years the rate for the poles specially erected shall be 10s .per annum for every quarter of a mile or fraction thereof. * Gunner Howes, who is attached to the South Head .barracks, while sitting on a seat in Clovelly 'Park, Watson's Bay, Sydney, heard a .shot at about (i p.m. on May 4th. He walked in the direction from which the sound came, .and found a man named James Russell, aged forty, a native of New Zealand, living in Pitt street, city. He was .bleeumg from a bullet wound under the heart, .and a revolver was lying near him. The police and Civil Ambulance 'were informed, and Russell was brought by the latter to Sj'dney Hospital, where it was* found that the bullet had passed close below the heart 'and almost penetrated his body. It could be felt embedded under the skin at the back of tne left .shoulder. On the way to the hospital Russell .said: "I am sorry I made a bungle of it. It was more than I could bear to see old men working hard. lam a student of political economy, and I do not think the wealth of (he world is evenly distributed."
