GOLF.
(By "Cleek "). The match which was arranged 101 Monday, Kith inst., between the Xga niotu and Waitstra Clubs, has been postponed. As the 24th of May will not now be observed as a public holiday, it is found impossible to get away a team of Ngarootu players to Ha-wera on that date. An endeavor is being made to arrange a match for June 3rd* The Carrington Road Club's annual meeting on Wednesday eveninc passed off very successfully. Mr* Geo. Gray made an excellent rliairniun, and put the busines- through in "double quick" time. The chairman was appointed both president air! captain. The club possesses very few experienced players, and as an experienced man is wanted for the important office of captain, 'the club eould not have made a better choice than electing the president, who has been the guiding spirit since the club was formed. The question of erecting a pavilion was discussed, it being decided to leave the matter in the hands of the committee, who are already moving in the matter, and hope to have the building up before the season progresses very far. Without a club-house, a golf club is at a big disadvantage and inconvenience. Wilh it erected., the club should make greater progress than ever. It is pretty certain that the membership will be much greater than last year. About twenty-five turned up for the preliminary game at the new links on Thursday, when a match, President's team. v. Vice-president's team, wiis played, a very enjoyable afternoon resulting. The official opening day is on the 24th, when, if the weather is not unfavorable, there should be a record attendance. The new links are all that coula be desired, being many points :;ltead of the old ones, a part of which this season would have been practically unplayable —owing to the growth of fern and blackberry—without the expenditure of a considerable sum of money. The grounds are "clean," and the grass short, sheep having been grazed there through the summer. There are difficulties, of course. There is a. big gully at the fourth hole, but it is not quite as wide or as treacherous in the matter of assimilating badlv-directed 'balls as the home hole on the old links. Then there is a row of pines to negotiate. The "teeing" noint, however, is fairly ele-1 vated, and the difficulty is more apparent than real. The securing of another paddock in the "line of fire" is all that is necessary to make the links svbs ; >lutel y everything that could be desired. Even without it, they are highly satisfactory. The club is arranging for the running of a 'bus every Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, returning at 4.30, 5.30 and fi.3o. This should prove 'a big convenience to many town members. |
A Msisterton golf player ' as taken a dislike to skylarks. Tn a -vcent mawi< lie made an excellent divvp. and the ball was speeding straish* its destination in u manner delightful to the heart of the golfer. Unfortunately, a skylark to fly across its course, and the ball struck the bird fairly, with the result that the latter dropped dead, and the former was deflected from its course. As the player 'aftenvards explained, hp diiln't so much n\nd ikilling the bird, but lie did objec' to his drive being spoilt by a sky'irk. The Wairarana Times savs ther • is some talk of a new rule being- franv d to meet circumstances of the kind which might occur in future.
