PARIHAKA ROAD BOARD
j MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the I'arihaka Road Board was held in the Board's ■ office, Rahotu, on Wednesday. Present: Messrs J. Young, M. Deegan, P. Willcox, J. Ducker and T. llarvey. Mr. Young was re-elected chairman. Mr. Youii"suitably returned thani-cs. Mr. Willcox 'asked whether it would not be better to keep ward account,*, ,astead of separate road accounts. Some of the principal roads wnich carried heavy traffic were in debt, whilst many bye-roads, which had hardly any traffic, were in credit. If ward accounts were kept it would save book-keeping and the rates could be expended equitably.
I The chairman said the money from the roads in credit was being spent on those in debt. He was not in fnror of abolishing separate road accounts. Mr. Ducker said that the roans which ■had to la>ep the district in timber and firewood should get assistance from the other roads. FOREMAN'S REPORT. The foreman's report .was dealt with as follows: Lower Parihaka Road: The work asked for by Mrs. Barrett is to be done oil condition that half the cost is paid. Harvey Road: One chain to be metalled as requested by Mrs. Barrett. Lower Waiteaka Road: Work on this road to the extent of £ls has been let. Upper Newa-11 Road: Contract on tiiis loan account has been completed and metalling done as authorised, Messrs Ducker Bros, and Cassie assisting witn teams. ■Opourapa Road: Thirteen and a-lialf chains of metalling have been done on this road, Messrs Duggan and Syinons assisting. Lower Kahui Road: The settlers have carted out 120 yds of grave!, which has been broken doiwoi. The stall' has also got out 35yds of boulder, which Mr. Morrow is carting out free. Upper Kahui Road: All broken stone has been carted and spread on the road 'where required. More stone is being carted out of the river higher up. The staff isi to remain another week. Lower Arawhata Road: Boulders have been carted out and spread and are noiw being broken. The contractors are to be given a month's- notice to complete.
Lower 'Parihaka Road: Seventeen and a-half chains -of drain have been cleared at a cost of 2s 3d per chain.
Iliaia Road: Fifteen chains have l>e«n cleared on this road at a cost of 2s per chain. The staff is to repair this road as soon as possible. Ngariki lload: Mr. F. Willcox has carted out 25 yards extra of metal at 2s (id per yard. This is broken an 4 there are now 220 yds ready. The broken metal is to be laid down at once. Bay ley Road: Twelve, chains of metalling on this road will be undertaken. PUNIHO JOINT LOAN. The secretary of the Werekino Road Board forwarded a statement of accounts in connection with the above and a cheque for £l4 4s, the balance on account. The Werekino Road Board is to be informed that the question of raising a special rate lies in the hands of the ratepayers interested. Tenders were dealt with as follows for work on this road: —D. Rothery £65 Jos, W. A. Thomas £5!), A. E. Magon £SB 10s (accepted). SANDERS ROAD. Mr. A. W. Phillips waited on the Board and asked that some work be done on the Sanders road. He was prepared to assist. The foreman stated that it would cost £7 18s to put down two pipe culverts and about eleven chains of drain, and in addition Mr. 'Phillips would do the lining, amounting to about £3. , Mr. Willcox moved that £5 be spent on the road.—The motion lapsed. ' The foreman is to attend to the Arawhata road. The foreman is to report on the Upper ami Lower Kina road at next meeting. A ballot decided that Messrs \oung, 1 Willcox and Dee.gan shall retire first, The permanent staff are to be allowed , holidays on Chrisinas Day, New Year's • Day and Good Friday on full pay.
