The death is announced of Sir W. Hugging, the astronomer,'aged 80. Mr. John McDougall, a shipwright well known throughout the Dominion, died at Xortheote on Tuesday last at the advanced age of 78. A Dunedin Press Association telegram records the death of Mr. A. W. Morris, an old resident of Dunedin, and a diractor of the Union Steam Ship Company. Mr. C. A. Briggs, who for many years has acted as secretary, and nt times as acting-manager, has been appointed manager of E. \V. Mills and Co., Ltd., Wellington.

The resignation of Lieutenint-Colonel E. X. L. Okev from the position of officer commanding the Tarnnaki Battalion has "been accepted', and his name has been placed on the active list, unattached, with the rank of lieutenantcolonel.

Mr. E. G. Whetter, M.A., inspector of schools, Taiianaki, is one of the apnliciiiits for the position of chief inspector under the Auckland Education Board. The salary is £GOO a year. The appointment will be made at the next meeting of the Board.

A committee has been formed at Pahiatna, with Mr. J. Walsh as secretary, to make arrangements for erecting a memorial to the late Michael Quirke, who was accidentally shot at Palmerston North during the "Powelka scare." The sum of £l2 was subscribed at the preliminary meeting.

Dr. Mac(!ibbon has disposed of his practice and interests in Hawera, and is leaving for the Old Country at an early date. After a look round he proposes to specialise in surgical work in London and Paris. His successor will be Dr. W. M. Thomson, holder of arts and provisional degrees of the University of New Zealand, and also holds rank as captain in the Indian medical service. He is * son of Mr. Thomson, M.P., and a brotW of the first Khodes scholar sent Home by New Zealand.—Star.
