WAGES ON STEAMERS.
AN AUSTRALIAN AWARD. By Cable—Press Association--Copyright, Melbourne, May 11. The Arbitration Court award in connection with the Federal Marine Stewards' and Pantrymen's Association of Australasia fixes the pay of second stewards at £7 10s a month, forecabin stewards and .pantrymen £6 10s, cnief saloon stewards £6, stewards of first grade, including saloon waiters, bedroom and smokeroom stewards, and each adult in the stewards' department not elsewhere specifically provided for, also barmen and storekeepers £5 10s; second grade stewards range from £2, where under 17 years of age to £5, where over 21 to £9; watchmen £7 on passenger steamers and £lO on cargo or collier vessels. The award, which operates for five years, is far .below the demands. The president explained that this was due to the fact that tips and perquisites received by stewards were taken into consideration. The Court had endeavored to secure an adequate income for employees, but it did not matter whether it came wholly from employers or part from passengers. Provision is mnde for holiday ajici overtime payments.
