INGLEWOOD NOTES.

(From Our Resident Correspondent.) ] The Inglewood Games Club held their ordinary weekly meeting on Friday evening, when a single-handed crib tournament was plajyed, the winner turning up in Mr. C. Gernhoefer. A pianola, the first of its kind, has made its appearance in Inglewood, and created somewhat of a diversion on Saturday night. A crowd soon congregated in the shop where the performance was being given, and many facetious remarks were addressed "to the operator, who, however, continued his task with Spartan heroism and Sphynxlike countenance. The annual meeting of the Moa Road Board was held in the Board offices on Saturday, when about twenty ratepayers were assembled. Mr. Harold Trimble was in the chair. The meeting was adjourned indefinitely, to enable the balance sheet to be audited. The Egmont Stables have recently changed hands, the new proprietor being Mr. H. Julian. Mr. B. Ford 'is now fairly installed in the Railway Hotel, and has had the building .painted and renovated both outside and in, adding considerably to the general appearance of the place. The news of the death of King Edward came as a great surprise and shock to everyone, and created a profound sensation. Business was practically suspended all through the town for some considerable time, and little knots of excited people were to be seen on the streets discussing the calamity. There is much speculation as to whether the tragic event and the appearance of the comet are in any way connected, and a general sense of uneasiness pervades the whole town. The flags on the Post Office and Railway Station were half-masted, as were also several •private ensign*. Special -services wore held in the churches on Sunday, and appropriate hymns were sung. The churches were all draped. 'A block in tlie traffic was caused on Friday by a traction engine falling through a small bridge on the main road this side of Tariki. Repairs, however, were soon effected and a temporary crossing made up. The engine was got out nl about 2 a.m. on. Saturday.
