DISTRICT NEWS

WAITARA ROAD,. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The first social of the season took place in the Huirangi Hall on Wednesday. There was a good attendance, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The following programme was given:— Pianoforte solo, Miss Ivy Giddy; song, Mr. N. Day; recitation, Mr. B. Luke; song, Mr. Thornley (encored); drill, school children; sing, Mrs. Day; song, Mr. D. Giddy; song and chorus, school girls; song, Mr. N. Day; reading, Mrs. S. Turnbull; song, Mr. Thornley (encored).

Mr. N. Day, who lias been relieving teacher at Huiratigi for the' last three months, was presented at the close of the entertainment by the scholars of the school with a sovereign ease, suitably engraved, the presentation being made by Master Harold Herrick. It is not usual to make a presentation on such short • acquaintance, but Mr. Day has made himself extremely popular with the boys, owing to the keen interest ho has taken in their welfare. Mr. Day severed his connection with the school last Friday, and Mr. Bullian from Auckland has taken charge. Mr. -T. JT. Smith did not seek re-elec-tion for the Waitara West Road Board this year. Mr. Surrey, of Huirangi, takes his place. While a member of the Board, Mr. Smith rendered srood service to the district, it being through his efforts that the Waitara road was metalled some three years ago. Mr. 11. Purdie is installing a Rid'l milking machine, and I believe several others are thinking of doing likewise. Milk is being received in srenter quantity just now l than at this time iast year at the Waitara Eoad factory, and the factory will probably run every other day after the middle of this month.
