A sequel to the quarrel between 'two Chinese on 20th April was heard in Court to-day, Jim Wong Sing being charged with assaulting Young Kee with a crowbar, with which a severe wound was inflicted on Kee's head. It was stated that the troirble arose through Kee taking Sing's '■girl" out for a motor drive. Sing was fined £ti. with £2 12s costs, or in the alternative three weeks' imprisonment. Kee was allowed £2 out of the fine. HEAVY DEFALCATIONS. Auckland. Friday. George Bater, a young man, plea'ned guilty and was committed for sentence at the Police Court for receiving £3503 on account of Messrs. Sharland°and Co. and failing to account for same. SYSTEMATIC THIEVING. Christchurc/h. Friday. At the Magistrate's Court to-day Henry George Cameron was sentenced to three weeks' imprisonment on each of seven charges of theft. The police said that Cameron had stolen from railway ca n-ia c-cs on country trains, and had app;:iv;i!l,- carried out a svstem of thieving all over Christchurch.' GRADUATED LAND TAX. Wellington, Friday. In the .Supreme Court to-day the Chief Justice delivered judgment in the action Henry Gaisford v. the Commissioner of Taxes, a claim for recover.- of graduated land tax paid under protest. The Court said the Assessment Act might require amendment to provide for exemption of life tenants where no income was earned, hut land tax was not based on income, but on occupancy of Jand. ' J Judgment was given for the Commissioner of Taxes. A BANKRUT COMMUTED. Wellington, Last Xisht. At the Magistrate's Court to-dav John Morris Schapiro, a bankrupt, was committed for trial on a charge of failing to keep proper books.
