CHINA FOR THE CHINESE
A GREAT STRUGGLE EXPECTED. A RUSSIANS VIEWS. By Cable —Press Association —Copyright. Sydney, May <S. Captain Varawa, a Russian merchant, of Shanghai, at present visiting Australia, says the biggest question just now before 1 China is the change in public opinion respecting military service. The best families have hitherto looked on military service as something .beneath them, but they are now actively participating in the formation of volunteer companies. There is a steadily-growing feeling that China should be retained tor tbf Chinese. The outbreak against misftcnaries was a small sectional uprising against missionaries only, because of their interference with a family matter. The Chinese acknowledge that the missionaries do good to the sick and poor, and teach them good lessons, tout the •point is that they also break up families. When one or two of the sons are taken away fror l the family belief to be made Christians the family honor is affected. If whole families were 'proselytised it would be all right, but to proselytise a portion of a family is unwise. No one can realise what family life means t«s the Chinese unless he has lived there. There was a belief amongst the Chinese that China would pass through its greatest struggle from 1907 t. ! i' 1917. Seers expect a great war, probably with Japan.
