Last week it was reported in the Times that owing to some anticipated difficulty dn'connection with the wharfage accommodation, the New Zealand Pliipning Co.'s steamer Opawa, with remainder of cargo from 'London, would not to to Nelson. The Nelson agents (Messrs E. Buxton and Co., Ltd.), who are large importers, together with other firms interested, at once eet to work to endeavor to prevent the transmoment at Wellington-of the Nelson cargo, but their efforts were unsuccessful, find the Opawa will not call at Nelson this voyage. The cable received by Messrs Buxton and Co. r-vas as follows:—"Owing to Nelson cargo being stowed in Nos. 1 and 2 holds, and that these cannot be discharged with safety pit your present wharf, it has- been decided to tranship cargo at Wellington." The Opawa (says the Nelson Colonist) has about 1200 tons of cargo for Nelson, and ine transhipment will cost the New Zealand Shipping Co. between £BOO and £9OO, •but apparently the directors think that it is better ftp pay this amount, for the cargo will be consigned to Nelson or through, bills of lading, than to run a possible risk, not on jaccount of the harbor facilities, hut on account of the lack of. wharfage aecommouation. The Opawa would have been the largest steamer to call at Nelson, being ,11.600 tons, and about 30 feet longer than the Paparoa. Captain Collins, pilot and harbormaster, is satisfied that the port would be 'worked as easily with toe Opawa as with the other ocean steamers, and that the vessel could be berthed so as to bring the N T os. 1 and 2 holds ! alongside the" wharf. The matter off wharfage accommodation, which has been constantly brought under the notice of 'the Government, who are "hasteninir slowly" in this connection, by the Nelson Harbor Board, will no doubt be again considered at a meeting of ithe Board.
