A Gisborne correspondent reports that recently, awakened bv the cries of their two-months-old infant, which occupied a cot next to their bed, Mr. and Mrs. Hanson, of Patutahi, saw a huge rat decamping. Furthor investigations showed_ that the rat .had been biting the child. There were several marks about its face, and there was a wound about the size of a five-shilling piece on the child's head, where the rat had been nibbling. Beekeepers in the far north have been sorely troubled iwith the depredation* of kingfishers (says the Auckland Herald).
