A Gisborne correspondent reports that recently, awakened bv the cries of their two-months-old infant, which occupied a cot next to their bed, Mr. and Mrs. Hanson, of Patutahi, saw a huge rat decamping. Furthor investigations showed_ that the rat .had been biting the child. There were several marks about its face, and there was a wound about the size of a five-shilling piece on the child's head, where the rat had been nibbling. The Xew Zealand Dairy Association, Ltd., has just completed its January accounts, and it is found that the value of .butter made by the Association during that month reached the handsome sum of £29,404 10s. On account of this, an advance sum of £10,778 13s (id Jias been paid to milk suppliers. These advance payments will be supplemented by further substantial (amounts. Beekeepers in the far north have been sorely troubled iwith the depredation* of kingfishers (says the Auckland Herald). These birds have devoured whole colonies of bees, and it is a common si«ht ,to see kingfishers perched in proximity to hives make sudden swoops and devour bees whilst thev are on the win" At Tangaihi Mr. G. S.hick has lost altogether ten hives., and has "been forced to wage war against the marauders. His mode of [defence is to set traps for the kingfishers, which have been caught in .hundreds, as many as twenty-five captures per diem being frequently recorded.
