FIGHTING IN THE BALKANS

THE ALBANIANS' STAND. ANNIHILATED BY THE TURKS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Constantinople, May 3. The insurgents at lvatchanik repeatedly made a stand, and fought at some pl.ves on the heights until they were annihilated. The strongest stand was made between Katchanik and Ghilan. The Turks failed to dislodge them, and Turget was obliged to bring reinforcements. The origin of the Albanian insurrection is put down to the Albanians-' indignation at being compelled under the rew regime to pay taxes to the Constantinople Government. The Albanians were formerly left mostly to their own devices. The Porte is now sending a Government Commission to investigate the progress of pacification and reform. . The Turks admit that the troops patrolling disaffected villages burn the houses of absentees unless proof is furnished to them of the owners' whereabouts, but bloodshed is avoided as far as possible.

TWELVE HUNDRED KILLED AND WOUNDED. Received May 4', 10.25 p.m. Vienna. May Reports have been received that the Turks lost four hundred killed and two hundred wounded at J\atchanik. and the Albanians an erjual number during their flight towards Chilian,- when they were exposed to the artillery.
