A London writer states that Mr. E. McXab is presenting to his old regiment/ in Xew Zealand—the Second Regiment of Otage Mounted Infantry —a silver trophy, the .work of the Army and Navy Co-operative Society in London. In the centre of the trophy is a round pedestal of ebony, ornamented with silver panels for inscriptions., and surmounting this pedestal is a silver horse and rider in mounted uniform. The pedestal stands on four claw feet, which in turn rest on a sloped ebony base, which also stands on four massive claw feet. On three of the. projecting comers of the ■ base stand silver figures of mounted in-1 fantry men, and on the remaining pro-' jection a .pile of arms. Mr. McXab has! recently returned to London from) France, whither he went to look up records of early Xew Zealand history among the State papers in Paris. He is fairly well satisfied with the result of his trip. His chief find was the journals j of De Surville, the first French navi-j gator to visit Xew Zealand. They con- j tain his records of the voyage from India to South America via Xew Zealand, and also charts of Xew Zealand and impressions of the Maoris an.. Maori weapons ana so forth'. Mr. McXab found out also that among the archives were a complete set of papers relating to the Akaroa settlement. Mr. McXab proposes to leave for Xew Zealand by the Euahin'e on 10th April. The week .prior to that date he has promised to the National Defence League for a lecturing tour in the South of England in the interests of universal military train*
