WHANGAMAMONA COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. Th# ordinary monthly meeting of the above took place on Wednesday last, when there were presents:—l.'rs. W. A. McCutchan (chairman), A. .Meredith, R. MeCluggage, J. M. .Jones, T. Mcllroy, E. B. Robertson and J. Anderson. The chairman reported, n:; In-half of the committee set up to deal with tenders, the acceptance of tenders as under: —Contract No. 18, metal carting from Te Wera, C. MePhce; metal carting on the Mangaowhata road, A. Neilson; carting out 300 yards of burnt papa in the township, W. Reid. The committee's action was endorsed. The chairman also reported that he had not taken action as desired by Mr. J. B. Jline, M.P., concerning the inconvenience of the present Te Wera coach service, and gave his reasons for no:, having done so. —The course adopted by the chairman was approved by the Council. The engineer's report was read, and it ■was resolved to offer the contractor on Mangaowhata road contract price tor surplus papa; the engineer to report as to the best place to spread it. The matter of the further expenditure of the- £250 Tapuni road grant was left in the engineer's hands; he to act in conformity with the wishes of the District Engineer and Mr. Foley. The engineer's report was then adopted. Messrs Malone, Anderson and Johnstone wrote in regard to the special rate for the Brewer.-lvirai loan, and it was resolved to forward to Mr. Coyne a copy of the solicitors' letter continuing the Council's action in striking this rate on the new valuation. Mr. P. Houlihan waited on the Council with a request to be relieved of the balance of his Brewer road contract, on which he was eight chains short and could not get metal.—lt was resolved to. inform the contractor that the Council requires him to complete his contract to the satisfaction of the engineer to a point to be fixed by the latter, after which the Council would relieve the contractor of the balance of the present contract. The Stratford Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote enclosing the medical superintendent's explanation in regard to a case complained of by Mr. Bowers. —lt was decided to forward a copy of the communication to Mr. Bowers. Messrs J. and T. Henderson and others wrote in regard to work on the 'Upper Mangaehu road.—The engineer was instructed to lay off and call tenders for the work asked for to the extent of the balance of loan moneys; the work to be tendered for in sections at the engineer's discretion.
The Eltham Comity Council wrote in reference, to Government grants on roads, and Crs. McCutchan, Anderson ymd Robertson were appointed a committee to reply to tlie letter. It was decided to notify a settler, who had applied for extension of time wherein to pay his rates, that the Coun-' cil regretted it had 110 power to grant the request.
The New Zealand Counties' Association wrote in reference to the insnnnce of the Council's employees, and it was resolved to notify the Association that the Council, without pledging itself to adopt the scheme, would supply with pleasure the information asked for ill respect of workers' insurance under the Workers' Compensation Act, 1008. The chairman was appointed as the Council's delegate to the Counties' Conference. Mrs. W. Holtz wrote in reference to a blocked drain on section !). Idock X.. Xgatimaru, and the letter was referred to the engineer to report thereon, in reference to Hood water.
[ -Mr. K McChigga.ge applied to lease a piece of road reserve near his property, and it was resolved to lease the land to him at 10s per annum upon the usual terms. Cr. Meredith was given leave to hold oyer until next meeting his notice of motion in reference to a bridge rate ill the Stra thm ore riding. Tn accordance with notice given, Mr. Anderson moved a resolution to the effect that the (Jhura road be maintained as a county responsibility, and the cost thereof be defrayed eipnl'.y by each riding on a valuation basis. The motion was first carried on division ■but, on Cr. Anderson, explaining that he included main road bridges in his resolution, it was subsequently rescinded, and a further resolution in the same terms but excepting the construction of bridges, was also lost. It was resolved that the matter of the charge of 10s per annum by the banks for keeping every account (loan and ordinary), anu .also the high rate of interest be brought by the Council's delegate before the Association with a view of having the .position ameliorated. A special order making heavy traffic by-laws under the Public Works Act was instituted, which, with the passing for payment of accounts totalling 0s 10d terminated the meeting.
