BROKEN STEERING GEAR. A HOWLIXi; GALE. SEAMAN INJURED. By Telegraph —Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The steamer Fifeshire, which reaened Wellington from the north this morning, had rather a sensational experience. The Fifeshire left Auckland on Saturday. April 23, and ran into a heavy southerly pile. On Sunday morning, \vl:en approaching East Cape, and Nvhen the steamer was making only about two knots an hour in the teeth of the gale, one of the chains belonging to the .steam steering gear snapped, putting the gear out of action. A few minutes later the cogwheels of the hand steering gear .snapped to pieces owing to the fury of the seas acting on the rudder. The engines were stopped, awl for about three hours, while repairs were effected to the steam steering gear, the Fifeshire lay broadside on to the sea, and she rolled very badly. Oil hags were used to modify the sea during repairing operations. Seaman N. Jacobs had a foot injured. The Fifeshire then ran north before the wind until the weather moderated, when she put about and resumed her voyage south. The Fifeshire called into the Napier roadstead on Thursday and transhipped about .'IOO tons of Napier cargo into lighters.
