ON THE PARAMATTA. SOME FINE SCULLING. ARNST CAUGHT NAPPING. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received May 1, 5.5 ip.m. Sydney, Last Night. Fine weather and the presence of Kick Arnst attracted an unusually large crowd to the sculling meeting on the banks of the Paramatta river, which were lined with spectators, while the river was alive with boats. The water was good, and the conditions, in the first heat splendid. The finish was between the Towns brothers, who held a prominent position from the mile mark, Leo Towns, with fit) seconds start, heating his brother! Norman (38sec) by a length. j Felton, witn 32sec, was a good third. Harry Pcarce gave up at the 2% mile post. The winner's time was 18.51. In the second heat, F. Matterson, with GSsec start, held the lead till passing the mile and a half post, when Zietsch (46sec) ivent to the front, and at the two miles post had two lengths to the good. Fogwell (18sec) made a splendid effort to overhaul the leaders. t Zietsch landed tlie winner by a length and a half. There were, a couple of lengths between the second and third. J. Arnst -started, but was early out of t'he race. Time, 18min 47sec. The third heat proved to he one ot the finest ever seen on the Paramatta, and the finish was sensational. Peter Kemp, jun. (60sec), overhauled the limit man, Backhouse (lOOsec) before reaching the half-mile turn. Kemp (TOsec) and G. Matterson (4Gsec) were close behind. At the' mile and a quarter Arnst shot past Backhouse and went in chase of Matterson, who was now leading from the two Kemps. Just before reaching the Gasworks, Arnst electrified the crowd by shooting through Lavcock. Tom Kemp and Fisher. A moment later he settled Peter Kemp's chancfl. At the two miles he got level with Sid Kemp, and was only three j lengths astern of Matterson. At the two and' a quarter miles post Arnst was ahead, and eased up after overhauling Matterson, and apparently was taking a wdll earned breather when young Matterson worked a surprise sprint, and before Arnst realised it Matterson was upon him. A desperate finished resulted in a dead heat., S. Kemp (3fisee) filling third wlace. Time, 17mm 50see.
