THE POWDERHAM STREET BRIDGE.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—lt seems to nie that it is the Council, and not the deputation, that waited upon tliem on Tuesday evening, that do not know where they stand in regard to tiie J'owderham street bridge.! The flavor promises a lull-width bridge, whilst Cr. Wilson solemnly warns the deputation that they cannot expcH the work to be finished until easements nre obtained from the Railway Department. Wlio is correct? The Mayor and Cr. Bellringer rise in virtuous indignation to disclaim any idea of the Council transfering any money to the other bridge. They protest too much, it is a matter of common knowledge that this action was contemplated and had been discussed 'by the Council as a wnole, though in committee, and I challenge Mayor Tisch or Cr. Bellringer to deny it. I am perfectly sure this would have been done if the Daily News had not spoilt the little game at the inception. Again, the Council state, in effect, but not in decided terms, that no such tiling as a 22ft. bridge had been decided upon. 'Now, I got information from three members of the Council (1 enclose their names) that such was 'to be the case. Cr. Bellringer and the Mayor say they arc quite satisfied with the work being done. They should be more consistent. The truth of the matter is, Sir, that a mess has been made of the whole work, and neither Mayor nor Councillors know where they stand, or where the thing will land them. The Mayor promised the deputation a fullwidth bridge. Well and good. .sail him to liis promise, but do not let the work of providing that bridge hang over indefinitely. You are to be commended for the active interest you have shown in this matter, and the deputation for extracting the promise it did from the Mayor. I hope the promise will Ibe redeemed—and right away at that.—l am, etc., RATEPAYER.
