IN A STATE OF WAR
THE GREAT NATIONS' PREPARATIONS. VIEWS OF SIR GEO. REID. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. London, April 20. Sir George Reid, speaking at Birmingham upon the manufacture of rifles for Australian cadets and the ibuilding of destroyers and ■Dreadnoughts, said it was proof that whilst statesmen are 'busy with professions oi peace the great nations are practically in a state of war. One danger ot vast armaments was that in a mad moment the w.liole destinies of the hujnan race might depend upon the odious arbitrament of brute force. Australia was right to make tremendous preparations for a danger that might never come, for if once the British Navy was destroyed her enemies would never allow it to be rebuilt.
