Preparat oils were at once made to leave the ship \i lier fate, but despite the fact that his wife and child and oflicen joined t'ie crew in boats, Ca.ptain Jones refused to leave the ship. He threatened to shoot with his revolver any person who trie! to force him to abandon the sinking barque, and all attempts to induce him to join his family were of no avail. So in order to save further life tile boats were headed for the shore, which was reached in safety. After drifting for about a mile the vessel filled and disappeared. The Province was an iron four-masted barque of 1842 tons gross and 160G tons net register. She was owned by Wm. Thomas and Sons, Ltd., of Liverpool, who, by the way, were owners of the four-masted barque Kate Thomas, which foundered off Land's End after being in collision while on a passage to Port Talbot from Antwerp.
