The inquest was opened on the eightye .i-old girl Phillips so brutally murdered at "Willoughby. Strong public interest was evinced in the case. The evidence showed that the famiry lived in great poverty and misery. On the night the child was killed the children went to bed foodless. The medical evidence showed that the little girl was prooably rendered unconscious by a Wow, the jugular vein being then severed. The medical witness .retailed the other horrifying injuries. One witness heard the three-year-old sister of deceased prattling to herself: "Poor Wickie! Daddy beat Wickie rnth TEe child was asked, where is Wickie?" and replied, "Daddy take her up into the bush." , The inquest was adjourned.
