I (From Our Uwn Correspondents.)

j KORITU (UPPER KENT ROAD)

The annual picnic in connection with the local school was hold in Mr. P. Olson's paddock, adjoining the school grounds on Thursday last. With the I excellent arrangements made by the energetic committee, and ideal weather, everything passed off splendidly, mere , being races and games of various kinds i for young and old, which were fully 'enjoyed by all. I might mention that in addition to a free tea, every scholar attending the school received a pnze. Great praise is duo to our teacher, Miss Stewart, for the excellent .manner in which she had trained the children in the various action pieces, etc. The singing of the National Anthem brought to a close a very enjoyable day's .proceedings. The milk supply at our creamery is slowly decreasing, although the supply is much higher than this month last year.

The many friends of Mrs. Willie Chatterton, of this district, who has been indisposed for some weeks, will be pleased to hear that, she is slowly improving.

1 EGMONT VILLAGE. I . ~.v I The initial meeting of the Card Club committee was held in the Hall on Monday. There was a full complement of committeemen present, and Mr. E. Burrows was elected chairman, and Mr. U. F. Dewhirst secretary and treasurer. Mr. Foster waited on the committee and reported that he had received the sum of 8s from the retiring secretary, being balance in hand from last year. Tuesday, May 3rd, was fixed as the opening night, meetings to 'be held fortnightly thereafter. A set of rules was drawn up for the management of the club's affairs. . At about 8 o'clock on Friday morning Mr. Henderson's milking-shed, with a hayloft over it, was completely de-

stroyed by lire. J am unable to ascertain if the place was insured, Imt in any case Mr. Henderson will probably be a heavy loser, as he had some 20 tons of hay for winter feed stored in the loft, and such a commodity is invaluable to the farmer, and cannot readily be replaced. The origin of the fire is unknown. The coming winter promises to "oe a very lively one so far as amusements go. Being art the main track of travelling companies, local residents have to depend to a great extent on their own efforts for their amusements, and they are not slow to avail themselves of their opportunities. Next week the annual meeting of the Debating Society is to be held, and a social" is'to be given bv the Dance committee of the Mangorei Rifle Club. There is also some taik of the forming of a Hall Improvement Fund Committee to run a series of entertainments for that purpose. The milk supply is falling off at the creamery, as is only to he expected, and with the heavy end of the season's work done the farmer has time to turn his thoughts to amusements, which are out of the question in the summer.
