The Maoriland Company's steamer Lauderdale, which has been delayed by the timber-stackers' strike at Melbourne, will leave that port during this week for Port Huon, where she will load timber for Bluff, Timaru and New Plymouth. The Lauderdale is a vessel of 160S tons, and is 201 feet in length. She will have a draught of about 10ft -when she reaches New Plymouth.

THE ALEXANDER. The Alexander, which left Westport on Friday night for New Plymouth, called at Nelson. She left the latter port yesterday afternoon and is due here at an early hour this morning. She will have about 350 tons of coal for New Plymouth.

The New Zealand Shipping Company's big cargo steamer Otaki left Waitara roadstead yesterday afternoon, passing off New Plymouth at about 2.30 o'clock. During last year 6835 vessels, aggregating 1,520,040 tons, entered the port of Auckland, while the figures for Wellington were 0486 vessels with a tonnage of 2,775,902.

Captain Collins, of tne Te Anau, «n-l Captain Showman, of the Koonya, have exchanged positions.

It is stated that in connection with the raising of the Koi at Nelson the services of the Union Company's salvage tug Terawhiti were costing the Anchor Company £IOO per day. According to report it has been decided to name the new steamer now being .built to the order of Messrs Turnbuli, Martin and Co. Argyllshire. This new steamer will, it is understood, not be ready for commission until the end of the year, and when .completed will he one Of the finest vessels of her class afloat. The registered tonnage will be about 14,000, and she is being specially designed for v the carriage of perishaWe products. She enters the Australasian trade.

The Moura, which has been lying idle at Port Chalmers for some time, has been shifted into dock for cleaning and overhaul, preparatory to going into commission on the West Coast trade. The Union Company, having- placed the Moura and Taviuni in commission, has now on vessels of its fleet lying idle at headquarters, a circumstance that has not been the case for a Ions; period. Laid up in port at Wellington are the Rotoiti, Takapuna, .and Haupiri. but there is the prospect that the firstnamed vessel may be engaged in the improved Gisborne-Napier service. . An unusually large nuinbtr of passengers embarked by the Mokoia which sailed on Thursday for Rarotonga. The vessel's complement totalled 112, of whom 45 travelled saloon and 07 were in the third class. A large proportion of them booked through to San Francisco. The steamer was by no mean's fully loaded with freight, grass seed be. ing one of the principal items .in the cargo.
